Coroner suppresses evidence at maternity death inquest

1:47 pm on 2 December 2015

A coroner has suppressed evidence at an inquest today into a maternity death in Nelson, after the family pleaded for privacy.

Carla na Nagara granted interim suppression of evidence into the death of the woman last year, in the interests of decency and privacy.

RNZ News had argued evidence involving the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board was a matter of public interest.

Ms na Nagara acknowledged the family's grief and the prospect of having to relive events through a hearing but said their preference for non-coverage was not enough of an argument in itself.

However, in the end she prohibited publication of evidence pending the release of her findings.
