South Island road speed limit cut investigated

1:13 pm on 3 December 2015

The speed limit on some South Island roads may be cut as the Transport Agency looks to reduce the number of crashes involving tourists.

The agency has announced another $25 million over the next three years to improve safety in Otago, Southland and the West Coast.

Chair of the Transport Agency project group Jim Harland said most of the money would be spent on adding more rumble strips and flexible barriers, as well as improving road shoulders and rest areas.

He said the agency would also investigate whether the speed limit in some places should be reduced.
