A restricted fire season will be declared for the whole of Southland and Otago tomorrow.
Southern Rural Fire Authority spokeswoman Sally Chesterfield said vegetation was drying out because of higher temperatures, high winds and less rain, and fires were becoming more unpredictable.
She also said if significant fires did break out they would be harder to extinguish.
A restricted fire season means people need a permit to light an open fire.
