More than 1800 homes near Christchurch are without power as a thunderstorm nears the city.
Heavy rain and hail is forecast this afternoon and MetService has a severe thunderstorm watch in place for Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains and North Otago.
Orion hoped to restore power to homes in Rolleston, Burnham and Springston by 4pm this afternoon.
