A man who killed his ex-partner's new boyfriend has been jailed for six years and four months.

Matthew Edmonds was acquitted of murder but found guilty of the manslaughter of Peter Bettink at a High Court trial in Auckland last month.

Edmonds had been in a relationship with Anneta Knott before moving to Whanganui but continued sending her money.

When he visited months later, Edmonds found Peter Bettink at the home of Ms Knott and lashed out at her.

Justice Venning said when Mr Bettink stepped forward, Edmonds unleashed his frustrations and punched and kicked him in a fatal attack.
