A transport project aimed at reducing travel time between Auckland's Mt Wellington and Onehunga is in the planning phase.

New Zealand Transport Agency and Auckland Transport are planning approvals and consents for the East West Connections project.

The agency's highway manager, Brett Gliddon, said the planning process follows a wide range of feedback on improving connections from Onehunga to Penrose.

The project will also speed up bus travel times between Mangere, Otahuhu and Sylvia Park.

People will be able to give further input on the design as it's developed.
