Two people wearing lifejackets have been treated for mild hypothermia after their kayak capsized and sank in the Waikato River.

The Fire Service said about midday, a person on the shore saw the kayak sink and the pair got swiftly swept out towards the river mouth.

Spokesperson Jaron Phillips said by the time firefighters arrived, along with the coastguard, the pair were quite a way from the shore.

He said they could be heard yelling for help from some distance, and once they were rescued, ambulance staff treated them before they were taken to hospital for a check-up.
