The office of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, says the president was not endorsing Nazism when he cited Adolf Hitler's rule as an example of effective presidential rule.

His office said his comments were misconstrued.

President Erdogan has made no secret of his desire to turn the Turkish presidency into a powerful executive role, which he has said would produce stronger government.

His critics feared this would give him too much power.
