Police have released the name of an Auckland man who died while canyoning alone in extreme weather near Thames at the weekend.

Bradley Mark Syred was last seen abseiling down a waterfall in the Billy Goat track area in Kauaeranga Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Search and rescue teams were not able to retrieve his body for 24 hours, due to bad weather.

Senior Sergeant Damion Rangitutia said it was understood the 32-years-old had attempted to descend the canyon by himself, despite warning signs about the rising water levels.

He said people needed to be aware of their skill levels, pay attention to warning signs and not go on similar types of adventures alone.
