Just one track on Mt Maunganui remains closed today, following the scrub fire that burnt almost two hectares of the mountain on Thursday.
Geologists and abseilers were yesterday checking the stability of the terrain.
The only walking track still closed is Waikorire, which runs mostly around the eastern side of the maunga.
Tauranga City Council said it will stay closed until geologists have finished their assessments next week.
Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority incident controller Alan Pearce said fire investigation officers and police spent part of yesterday looking into the cause of the fire.
"What we were looking for was point of ignition and a few other things and we were looking for evidence as well of deliberate cause.
"I'm not prepared to release the findings at this stage, let's just say it was a very thorough investigation."
