A man has drowned while swimming with his family in the sea off Waikato.
He got into difficulty at Taharoa, south of Kawhia at lunchtime today.
The 28-year-old from Tokoroa was in the water with five other family members near Te Koraha Marae.
He was unable to be rescued by his relatives and drifted out to sea.
The Coastguard asked the crew on a local boat to try to save him not far from shore, but they were unable to revive him.
