MetService has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the South Island from early tomorrow morning.
Heavy rain is expected for Fiordland, Westland, Southern Lakes and Canterbury High Country, which is likely to last until Tuesday morning.
More than 700 millimetres of rain could fall in some of those areas, meaning rivers and streams will rise rapidly with flash flooding slips are likely.
