Rural Games kick off in Queenstown

3:41 pm on 6 February 2016

The second Rural Games is being held in Queenstown this weekend, with events involving coal shovelling, speed hand milking and cowpat tossing.

One of the highlights is the annual Running of the Wools through the centre of Queenstown, involving hundreds of merino sheep.

The Games are designed to promote the agricultural sector and provide a number of scholarships to preserve rural sports that are at risk of disappearing.

Organiser Steve Hollander said he planned to eventually turn the Rural Games into a national event circuit.
