Shark sighted in Mt Maunganui

11:43 am on 7 February 2016

Reports of a shark swimming around Pilot Bay, Mount Maunganui, are being investigated by police and Surf Lifesavers.

Police say they received two calls about the shark, which is estimated to be between two and three metres long, about 9.30 this morning.

Surf Lifesaving has been patrolling the area in an inflatable boat but have not found anything.

Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner from the Bay of Plenty command centre says bronze whaling sharks were commonly spotted in the area and usually posed no threat to people.
