Aviation industry vows to cut aircraft emissions

11:57 am on 10 February 2016

Global aviation experts have agreed to cut emissions from aircraft.

The deal will apply to all new planes from 2020 and will be phased in for existing aircraft from 2023.

It was agreed by an expert panel of the International Civil Aviation Organization but still needs approval from its governing council.

Aviation was not included in the global climate deal reached in Paris in December, but aviation representatives had been working on the issue with some new planes already exceeding the new standard.

Commercial aircraft account for 11 percent of carbon emissions from transportation worldwide.
