The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch is gravely ill and has been admitted to palliative care.
The church says Barry Jones, who was appointed bishop in 2007, has suffered a series of strokes and heart attacks and his condition is failing.
It says his family has gathered to be with him.
