Power has been restored to close to 800 homes in Lower Hutt, near Wellington.
Wellington Electricity said the power cuts affected 817 properties in 20 streets in the suburbs of Maungaraki, Normandale and Korokoro, at about 7am today.
It said power has been restored to all but 23 of those homes.
The company was looking into what caused the problem.
