Firefighters damp down Pines Beach fire

10:16 am on 21 February 2016

About a dozen rural firefighters will return to the north Canterbury town of Pines Beach this morning to consolidate containment lines around a six hectare fire.

Tim Sheppard, the principal officer for the Waimakariri Rural Fire Authority, said the fire, which began early Friday morning, was contained yesterday and had not spread further.

Three crews had been working overnight on the fire, which he believed might have been started deliberately.

Mr Sheppard is urging the public to steer clear of the site over the next few days.
