Large crowd expected at protest in Karamea

A large crowd is expected to turn out on Saturday in the West Coast township of Karamea to protest against planned changes to policing on the coast.

Buller District Mayor Garry Howard says the protest is in opposition to police proposals that could see Karamea lose its sole police officer and many services centralised in Greymouth.

The move has sparked widespread concern throughout the Buller District and close to 350 people packed into a meeting in Westport earlier this month to voice their concern.

The police extended the time for consultation on the proposal, and the closing date for submissions is now 4 March.
