Fiji takes cyclone appeal to the United Nations

Fiji has taken a cyclone appeal to the United Nations in a bid to raise almost $NZ60 million from UN member states.

More than 55,000 people are still in evacuation centres in Fiji, nearly two weeks after Cyclone Winston destroyed 24,000 houses.

The country's prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, says the aid needs identified in the appeal reflect the priorities of his government.

The appeal is a joint effort with the UN's relief coordination agency.
