Inquiry continues into muddied water in Hawke's Bay

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council says it is continuing a thorough investigation into how silt was discharged into the Waiau River, and the effect it is having on the environment.

The Eastland Group's Waihi Dam has been discharging silt since before Christmas, after a sluice gate was damaged in a storm.

The council issued an abatement notice at the beginning of January requiring the gate to be closed but, because of the damage, it could not be closed fully.

Eastland began work on resolving the problem just over two weeks ago, and the council said staff who visited the site last week were happy with the progress being made.
