An assault on an elderly woman in Hamilton yesterday was cowardly, the police have said.

A Hamilton police spokesperson said the woman was approached by a young man when she arrived home, and after getting into a conversation he used force to take her handbag, causing her to fall to the ground.
The man left the Fifth Avenue property on foot.
Detective Sergeant Nick O'Brien said it was a cowardly act against a vulnerable member of the community.
He said the woman had been taken to hospital for observation.
