A young man is feared dead after he failed to surface while swimming at the Hunua Falls, south of Auckland today.
Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were called to the scene about 6pm.
Police said the young man was swimming with a group of friends, when he struck difficulty, went under and did not resurface.
One of his friends and two members of the public tried to help him, and the friend is now in Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.
Members of the Police National Dive Squad have been sent to retrieve the body, and the Hunua Falls swimming hole will be guarded overnight.
