Former mine boss dies in plane crash

A man who turned Vale SA into the world's biggest iron ore producer has died with his family in a plane crash in Brazil.

Roger Agnelli, a Brazilian banker and former chief executive of Vale SA, died on Saturday in a plane crash, a source close to aviation authorities told Reuters. He was 56.

His wife and two children were among six others killed when his private monoplane slammed into two homes around 3:20 pm (7.20am Sunday New Zealand time), minutes after taking off from northern Sao Paulo.

Sources said Mr Agnelli was traveling to a wedding ceremony in Rio de Janeiro with his wife Andréia, son João, daughter Anna Carolina, and their two spouses.

Mr Agnelli was pushed out of his role at Vale SA in May 2011 over political tensions, just months after Dilma Rousseff took office as President.
