A Hamilton woman has been undergoing surgery after a man attacked her with a metal bar.
Police said the 23-year-old woman heard a noise from an upstairs room in her Edgecumbe Street home about 11.30 last night.
When she investigated she was confronted by a man wearing a balaclava and wielding a metal bar or pole with a hook on the end of it.
The woman was hit around the head and was assaulted again after she screamed and ran outside, police said.
A neighbour came to her assistance and the assailant ran off.
The woman is in Waikato Hospital.
