The United Kingdom is shaking up its general visa scheme for skilled workers, the system used by 600 New Zealanders last year.
From April next year, British employers will be charged about $NZ2000 if they employ migrants under what is known as the Tier 2 policy.
The British government is also raising the minimum salaries staff should be paid.
The move is designed to reduce Britain's reliance on migrant workers and to get employers to train locals.
The move is also designed to stop businesses from using foreign workers to undercut wages.
