Smoke over Whangarei harbour part of drill

11:22 am on 2 April 2016

There has been smoke and fire over Whangarei harbour this morning - but no cause for panic.

The special effects at 10am were part of a training exercise for young people getting hands-on experience with the Youth in Emergency Services programme.

The programme's Northland coordinator, Shona Morgan, said helicopters, coastguard boats, fire engines, police and ambulances would all be operating from the Onerahi boat ramp.

The scenario involved triage, rescue and a search for an injured missing person.

Ms Morgan said smoke bombs and a fire would help to make the exercise realistic and the action should be visible around the harbour from about 10am this morning.
