Internet connection has been restored for thousands of customers in the middle of the South Island this afternoon.

Thousands were left without internet access, after a fibre cable was cut between Kaiapoi and Papanui just before 8am today.

A Vodafone spokesperson said the cut affected two, three and four G mobile services as well as fixed broadband connections for both Spark and Vodafone.

Transpower said it was conducting scheduled maintenance and had notified the fibre's owner, Vocus, there would be an outage.

However, a spokesperson for Chorus, which leases some of the fibre, said as far as he knew company was not informed.

Spark said about 2000 customers were affected and Chorus said about 1000 of its customers were without internet.
