Otago University has increased its international student roll for the first time since 2011.

The turnaround was announced at a meeting of the university's council today.

The University has been under pressure from Tertiary Education minister, Steven Joyce, to increase its international student numbers.

Otago's full-fee international enrolments were up by 65, or 5.8 percent, largely because of strong growth from the United States, the University said.

That had helped the University grow its total enrolments by four students, to 17,153, ending a pattern of falling numbers since 2010.
