The owner of a pitbull-boxer cross that attacked a Tokoroa teenager last week has been remanded on bail.

Police said the 47 year-old man entered no plea when he appeared before the Tokoroa District Court today on a charge of owning a dog that causes injury.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment or a $20,000 fine.

A 16 year-old boy received bites to the chest, arm, and leg when he was attacked by the dog in the South Waikato town on Wednesday.

The attack was only stopped when the boy's three friends were able to grab the dog and sit on it.

The dog was put down following the attack.
