Christchurch's New Brighton pier may have to close for up to 18 months for earthquake repairs.
The city council is reassuring the public the pier - which has remained open - is still safe to use in the meantime.
It says the work will ensure there was no further degradation of the pillars holding the pier up.
Repairs will start in spring.
Work on quake damage to the nearby New Brighton library will be done at the same time.
