Electric bicycles to get no-motor capital treatment

Electric bicycles could soon be allowed on some of the capital's commuter paths and mountain bike tracks.

City bylaws regard e-bikes as motorised vehicles which are prohibited from all 340km of Wellington's off-road tracks.

In the council's review of its Open Space Access Plan bylaw, officers recommended letting e-bikes use the tracks where they will not overly annoy existing users, such as runners, walkers, and mountain bikers.

To decide which tracks the rule would apply to, officers were to look at issues of public safety, sightlines, the width of the path, and the possible damage to the route.

Eligible bikes will be low-power models, where the motor cuts out at 25km/h.
