Crackdown on online live sports betting in Australia

8:39 pm on 28 April 2016

The Australian government says it is closing a loophole that enables live sports betting on the internet.

Currently, so-called in-play betting is only allowed over the phone, but some betting companies have created apps that allow punters to place in-progress bets online.

But the Australian government says those companies should shut down the apps immediately, because they're operating against the intent of the law.

The New Zealand government, meanwhile, plans to tax international online gambling operators that take wagers from local punters.

Submissions on proposals to lift restrictions on the New Zealand Racing Board taking in-play wagers close later this month.
