A magnitude 4.4 earthquake has struck near Milford Sound.
The quake happened at 9.44pm, 35 kilometres north-east of Milford Sound.
Geonet earlier said it was 15km deep and 'moderate', but later upgraded it to 5km deep and 'strong'.
It was felt from Wellington to the bottom of the South Island. Most reported it as weak, but those near the centre of the quake reported it as strong.
