DoC reduces caution area around Ruapehu crater

Department of Conservation has reduced the area of caution around Mount Ruapehu's crater, but is asking climbers to still be careful around the summit area.

Earlier this month, people were advised to stay two kilometres away from the mountain's crater after GNS scientists noted an increase in the crater lake's temperature.

But the department said the temperature had dropped, and the limit has now changed to 400m from the lake's shoreline.

GNS Science has kept the volcanic alert level at 2, marking moderate to heightened volcanic unrest.
