Positive news for injured New Zealander at Australian detention centre

A New Zealander held at an Australian immigration detention centre who feared his leg might need amputating has had positive news from doctors.

Earlier this week the man, who is diabetic, said substandard care in the Villawood centre in Sydney had left him with a deep abcess.

A specialist had since instructed the centre's nurses on dressing the wound differently - though so far that had not been going well, he said.

He expected to get to see the centre's doctor for the first time soon, since returning from having surgery on his leg in early May.
