Man charged after brakes failed on tourist bus remanded

A man being prosecuted over the crash of a tourist bus that seriously injured 13 passengers has been remanded until 20 June.

James Henry Coakley was in charge of maintaining the bus which was travelling to the West Coast when the driver lost control and collided with an oncoming car before hitting a barrier and overturning in the Otira Gorge.

Police say the crash was due to the failure of the brakes on the bus and it was miraculous no lives were lost, as the barrier was all that separated the bus from a steep ravine.

Mr Coakley, 68, was charged with injuring by unlawful act last week in the Christchurch District Court.
