A five-year-old boy who was attacked by dogs is being released from Gisborne Hospital today.

The boy was seriously injured after being mauled at a Gisborne home on Saturday.

Neighbours used poles to fend off and pull free the boy, who was visiting the house with an aunty, Gisborne's deputy mayor Rehette Stoltz said.

Four dogs were taken by animal control officers from the property following the attack, Ms Stoltz said.

Police say the dogs owner is facing one charge of owning a dog that caused injury.
