Property developer spent $500,000 just for consent

A Porirua property developer spent more than $500,000 getting resource consent for a new development in the suburb of Whitby.

Jagger NZ Limited has recently gained consent to build 148 new homes on the 13 hectare site, on the bottom nine holes of the old Duck Creek golf course.

Company director Bob Turner said it took over a year to get through the process, and he will not look to develop any other sites with creeks running through them as a result.

"The cost and time involved just makes it such a hard process to get through. They're not prohibitive but they all get added on to the cost of the sections unfortunately, for the end user. That's quite a lot of money just to get consent."

Mr Turner said he has another block of land nearby, which he also planned to develop, but he hoped the consent process would be much faster.
