The government has announced funding for young people in the Buller region to help them achieve an internationally recognised personal achievement award.

Youth Minister Nikki Kaye said the Buller Rural Education Activities Programme would get $110,000 to support local young people to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award.

She said the funding would support a minimum of 100 aspirants for the award.

Ms Kaye said the government wanted to be sure young people from disadvantaged backgrounds were encouraged and supported to seek the award.
