A struggling Christchurch community group that provides children with a place to play with mountains of donated Lego blocks has received a helping hand, straight out of the pockets of a group of city councillors.

The Imagination Station has been providing free entertainment for children for the past year, thanks largely to donations from the community, but has now run out of money and has been threatened with closure.

Christchurch City councillors yesterday voted to donate the fees some of them received for sitting on the boards of council-owned companies to enable it to stay open.

The $75,000 donation should keep the group going for another year.
