Australian Greens eye NZ's biking tourism crown for Tasmania

The Australian Greens Party wants Tasmania to overtake New Zealand as a top mountain-biking destination.

The party has proposed spending $6 million promoting mountain biking in the state, as well as building the necessary infrastructure.

Green senator Peter Whish-Wilson said Tasmania had huge potential to tap into the adventure tourism market.

"There's absolutely no reason given the wilderness, the heritage and the beauty of tasmania- and all the rugged terrain we've got here - that we can't be the world's number-one mountain biking destination within 20 years," he said.
