ANZCO sentenced for man crushed while slaughtering cows

A meat processing company has been ordered to pay $107,000 after a meatworker was badly crushed by the door of a stun box.

CMP Canterbury Limited, a subsidiary of ANZCO, was sentenced today in the Ashburton District Court for failing to keep Hisham Almansi safe at work last June.

It has been fined nearly $40,000 and must also pay nearly $70,000 in reparation to Mr Almansi, on top of $12,000 it's already paid him.

Worksafe says Mr Almansi, who was slaughtering stunned cows, was crushed when the door was accidentally activated.

He broke two femurs, suffered fractures to his lower back, and had a stroke as a result of his injuries.

He also had memory loss and is yet to return to work.

The chief investigator, Keith Stewart, says locking pins would have made the door safe.

ANZCO says it has accepted responsibility, and it deeply regrets the pain and injury it caused Mr Almansi.
