Wholesale trade sales up 2.5%

Wholesale trade sales rose slightly in the final three months of last year, recovering from a sharp drop in the previous quarter.

Official figures show seasonally adjusted wholesale sales rose 2.5% in the three months to December.

The statistics monitor the level of activity in the wholesale trade sector, which supplies retailers.

The main drivers of the rise were machinery and equipment wholesaling and grocery, liquor, and tobacco sales, while motor vehicles and other goods fell

The value of total wholesale trade stocks was $8.9 billion at the end of December.
