The Transport Ministry has released its first in-depth report on container movements at New Zealand ports.

The Freight Information Gathering System expands on current data from Statistics New Zealand, and includes freight volumes for each container, balance of exports and imports and the mode of transport.

Ministry spokesperson Bruce Johnson says up until now there has been limited information about freight movements.

Five ports - including Auckland, Tauranga, Taranaki, Napier and Nelson - were involved in the first report from July to September last year.

Ports of Auckland imported the most containers during the period, while Port of Tauranga was the biggest exporter.

Wood and wood products accounted for 33% of export from all the ports.
