Kiwifruit peace talks break out

12:18 pm on 4 April 2012

Turners & Growers says it's time to make peace with Zespri, following an acrimonious battle in which the company tried to break the kiwifruit exporter's stranglehold on the offshore market.

Turners & Growers now has a new chief executive and a new board, following the purchase of 73% of the business by BayWa, a German firm.

The company was previously engaged in an aggressive challenge to Zespri's export monopoly.

However, chief executive Geoff Hipkins says that strategy is over.

He is to meet Zespri on Thursday to talk about how the two companies can market their kiwifruit collaboratively overseas.

He believes BayWa's knowledge of European markets will be of interest to Zespri.

He says he wants to forget the legal challenges of the past.
