Opposition to new mine plan withdrawn

12:53 pm on 27 April 2012

West Coast residents who had opposed the creation of a new mine have withdrawn their appeal to the Environment Court.

Bathhurst Resources says the result is due to successful mediation process with the Fairdown Whareatea Residents Association.

Two other environmental groups including the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, have also withdrawn appeals.

The company said it has revised its plan for the coal mine which reduces the environmental effects of the project.

But it needs to get new resources consents for the revised plans. It will proceed with its original plan it doesn't obtain them.
