Losses of bookings for conferences and other big functions since Wellington town hall was revealed as erthquake-prone have cost Wellington City Council $700,000.
Two major conferences were withdrawn after an engineering report found the building met only 20% to 25% of current earthquake standards - well short of the required 34%.
One group, the Human Resources Institute says it chose a different venue for its annual conference because it wanted to be sensitive to concerns about the building.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says $4 million has been budgeted for upgrading another venue - yet to be decided - as a conference facility.
