Nation loses 850 migrants in April

Fewer arrivals and a continuing exodus to Australia has led to the largest monthly fall in net migration figures in more than 11 years.

Statistics New Zealand says the country experienced a seasonally-adjusted net migration loss of 850 people during April, compared with a gain of 230 in the previous month.

It's the biggest monthly loss since February 2001.

Deutsche Bank chief economist Darren Gibbs says the number of immigrants has slowed, while more New Zealanders have moved to Australia because of the prospect of higher wages and better job opportunities.

"We are seeing a continued modest migrant outflow," he says.
