The number of new car registrations rebounded in May, rising 9.4% from the previous month, and 31% from the same month a year earlier.
New Zealand Transport Agency figures show the number of used car registrations rose almost 16% in the month, but were still 3% lower than in May last year.
The number of new commercial vehicle registrations surged nearly 47%, to be up about 17% on a year ago.
Toyota was the top-selling make, followed by Holden, and Ford.
Overall, car registrations, new and used, were 13% up for the month and 10% on a year ago.
